Roper Lake State Park is a camping and fishing site 6 miles south of Safford in Graham County, Arizona.

Roper Lake State Park offers three campgrounds with options for RVs and tents.

Tent camping at Roper Lake

Hacienda Campground has 20 sites with water and electric hookups (20/30 amp).

Cottonwood Campground offers 25 sites with 20/30/50 amp hookups.

Gila Campground provides non-electric sites and group camping.

Each site includes picnic tables and fire rings, with nearby restrooms and showers.

RVs up to 45 feet are accommodated, and a dump station is available. Reservations are required.

Roper Lake State Park offers eight lakeside cabins for a comfortable, scenic stay along the lake.

The cabins accommodate up to six people, and feature bunk or full-size beds.

The Roper Lake cabins feature both air conditioning and heat, so they’re comfortable year-round.

While open flames aren’t allowed inside, outdoor picnic tables, charcoal grills, and nearby restrooms and showers make for a convenient setup.

Cabins are available year-round for $65-$70 per night, with some being pet-friendly for an additional fee.

Reservations can be made up to 365 days in advance of your visit! If you’re definite about your dates, I’d book as soon as possible.


Fishing Information

Roper Lake is a popular fishing spot, stocked with various fish species including largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and rainbow trout. The lake is regularly restocked with trout in the winter, making it a prime time for anglers.

Boat & Kayak Rentals

Roper Lake is a small lake, so gas-powered boats are not allowed.

Non-motorized watercraft like kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards are allowed.

Roper Lake is a year-round destination, but each season offers a unique experience:

  • Spring (March-May): Expect pleasant temperatures, averaging between 60-80°F, with blooming desert flowers.
  • Summer (June-August): Summers can get hot, with temperatures in eastern Arizona reaching 100°F. The lake is perfect for swimming and cooling off during the hottest part of the day.
  • Fall (September-November): With temperatures dropping back to a comfortable 70-80°F, fall is ideal for fishing, kayaking, and hiking.
  • Winter (December-February): Winters are relatively mild-ish, with daytime highs around 50°F. Nights can get chilly, so bring warm layers if you’re camping!

History of Roper Lake State Park

Roper Lake was initially developed in the early 1960s as a private recreational area.

In 1969, the Arizona Game and Fish Commission purchased the lake and its surrounding property.
